Something not working, or an idea for Ensemble? Email mike@mikeshear.com. It helps to say which device you're using (iPhone, iPad or Mac) and what you were doing when it went wrong. Every message is read by the person who makes the app.

Getting started

On first launch, Ensemble opens with a sample closet of 24 pieces, so you can try the stylist, packing and capsules before photographing anything. A banner at the top shows you're in the sample closet; tap Leave to start your own. Nothing in the sample closet is saved or mixed into yours, and you can return to it any time from the Closet's ··· menu.

To add your own clothes, take or import photos from the Closet, or on the Mac drag them in. About fifteen favourites is plenty to begin with.

Tagging and Google's Gemini AI

When you add a garment, its photo is sent through Ensemble's server to Google's Gemini AI, which tags its category, colour, fabric, warmth and formality. Planning a trip and building your style profile use it the same way. Ensemble asks your permission the first time, and nothing is stored on the server. The daily stylist runs on your device and never uses it.

If you chose Not Now, trying again asks again. To turn it on or off, go to Settings in the Closet's ··· menu. A garment that couldn't be tagged can be retagged from the same menu.

Syncing between iPhone, iPad and Mac

Ensemble syncs through your own private iCloud. For your closet to appear on another device, both must be signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud turned on. You can check the status, or back up straight away, in Style profile in the Closet's ··· menu. Photos can take a little longer to arrive than the rest of the closet.

Weather

Ensemble uses your approximate location, rounded to about a kilometre, to fetch the local forecast, so looks suit the day. If you'd rather not share it, the stylist still works; it just can't account for the weather. You can change the permission in your device's Settings under Privacy & Security › Location Services.

Mac: grabbing from the screen

To capture something you're thinking of buying straight off the screen, macOS asks for Screen Recording permission. Ensemble uses it only when you ask for a grab, and keeps only the area you select. You can turn it off in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording.

Ensemble Pro

Travel, Capsules and Considering are part of Ensemble Pro, an optional subscription sold through the App Store. Your closet, the daily stylist and sharing looks are free.

Deleting your data

Delete a garment, look, trip or capsule in the app. Delete everything from iCloud in Settings removes Ensemble's iCloud copy. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on that device. Nothing is kept on Ensemble's server, so there is nothing to delete there. More in the privacy policy.

Requirements

iOS 17 or later on iPhone, iPadOS 17 or later on iPad, and macOS 14 Sonoma or later on the Mac.
