Notch, with capture
There are two Notch apps for the Mac. The one on the App Store has everything else on this site. This one adds capture: press โโฅโC over whatever you're looking at, type the task, and it arrives in Reminders with a link straight back to the email, file, photo or story it came from.
It is a separate download because the App Store requires every Mac app to run in a sandbox, and the sandbox doesn't let one app ask another what you have selected, which is the whole of what capture does. Apple notarises this version, and it keeps itself up to date.

โ๏ธ Mail and Mimestream
Notch asks your mail app for the message you have selected and attaches a link to it, labelled with its subject. Open the task later and the link lands on that exact message.
๐ Prexy
Over Prexy, the task links to the story you're working on, so the follow-up and the story can always find each other.
๐ Finder and ๐ผ Photos
The file or photo you have selected is offered, not attached: the panel shows its name, and โK attaches it. A photo is saved to Pictures โบ Captured to Tasks so the reminder has something to point to. A file is revealed in the Finder when you open the task. Nothing is ever uploaded.
๐ฌ Messages and WhatsApp
Neither app can be asked for a link, so Notch reads the conversation instead. Press โK, drag across the messages you want, and their text is read on your Mac and written into the task's notes. The picture is deleted as soon as it has been read.
๐ป Two ways to buy, one purchase
The direct version is free for 14 days. After that it unlocks with a one-time $9.99 purchase, made either here or on the App Store. Either one works on every Mac you use.
Buy it here. Checkout is handled by Stripe. When you've paid, press Activate in Notch on the page that follows, and keep a copy of your license for your other Macs.
Or buy it on the App Store. Buy Notch in the App Store version, or restore a purchase you already made. Then open the download and double-click Notch: it replaces the App Store version for you, checks Apple's signed record of your purchase, and unlocks itself.
Downloaded Notch for Mac while it was free? That counts too: the direct version unlocks the same way when it replaces the App Store copy.
๐ What it asks permission for
macOS asks once for each thing, the first time capture needs it: Automation for each app Notch asks for a link (Mail, Mimestream, Finder, Photos, Prexy); and Screen Recording for reading Messages and WhatsApp. It never asks for Accessibility. Every permission is optional. Without one, that one kind of capture stops, and everything else carries on.
โน๏ธ Good to know
Only one Notch can be installed on a Mac at a time: the two versions are the same app, and the direct one replaces the App Store one. Settings don't carry over between them. Your tasks do, because they are in Reminders. Requires macOS 14 or later.
